Product Description Revised third edition!
Alex Rogo is the manager of a failing manufacturing plant who receives an ultimatum from corporate headquarters: Turn the situation around in three months or the plant will be scrapped. With help from a mysterious mentor, Rogo discovers a revolutionary new way to do business?a way for people in any field of endeavor to increase productivity, profitability, and personal fulfillment.
A business book disguised as a novel, a love story about the manufacturing process, and an exhilarating adventure in human potential, The Goal is changing how America does business. First published in 1984, it became an underground bestseller; today it's used by thousands of companies and taught in hundreds of business schools. Includes the author's personal story, "My Saga."
This third edition includes case study interviews. Professional readers recreate interviews that David Whitford, Editor at Large with Fortune Small Business, conducts with the author Eli Goldratt and with business professionals from General Motors, Thomson-Shore, Security Federal Banks and others who put the principles of The Goal into action.

Food for thought December 27, 2008 Dr Eli forces us to examine our long held beliefs, assumptions and behavioural patterns. I think most people would readily identify with Alex Rogo's character and his challenges at the workplace and at home. Definitely an all-time business classic !
A must for aspiring managers in almost any field December 22, 2008 The author captivates the reader by creating situational drama that anyone working in manufacturing can relate with. The lessons he wants to convey are brilliantly laid out so that the reader is not spoon-fed the answers, yet the answers are clear and validated using logic which is very skillfully developed by the author. Unlike many books I've read on methodologies in manufacturing, the philosophy and methods described in this book are as relevant and timeless as the Socratic method itself, and in fact have far-reaching application outside of manufacturing. Bottom line - the book teaches us to find out what really matters to the company or organization, and focus on it.
The application of reason to systems December 16, 2008 Eli Goldratt's Theory of Constraints is simply stated the application of reason to a controlled system. This is probably the most interesting and helpful book that I read during my time at University. If the big 3 did not have an unchangable establisment perhaps their brighter managers would have read this book and applied TOC. Then we would not be having to bail them out. I recommend this book to all managers, small business owners or anyone else who has to deal with systems that produce products or services.
Great storyline & worth the read ... December 7, 2008 I was given this book at my workplace. I delayed reading it, honestly, because it looked a little old school. However, once I picked it up, I realized why it had been rated the #1 business book on several all-time lists. It's easy to read in a story format. It flows easily and allows the reader to digest the information as if he/she were in the room with the characters. The story is based around manufacturing and plant management but weaves in the entire business organization/team building/leadership side of things as well. I would have preferred a few more business applications. That's the only reason I give the book 4 stars. Overall, it's a nice read.
BAD CD - chapters mislabeled & out of order December 1, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Sound quality was great and the effects kept it interesting. Unfortunately, the computer files were mislabeled so when I put this on my ipod the chapters were rearranged. When I was listening, the chapters were presented out of order. It didn't seem to matter.
This was required reading for me so I don't care about the content. Although, the storyline about the narrator's personal life was too much added drama and negativity.
