Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The first edition of this book was released at the 2001 Tech Ed conference in Atlanta, Georgia. Since that time, this text has been revised, tweaked, and enhanced to account for the changes found within each release of the .NET platform (1.1, 2.0, 3.0 and now 3.5).

The last version, .NET 3.0, was more of an augmentative release, essentially providing three new APIs: Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) and Windows Workflow Foundation (WF). As you would expect, coverage of the "W's" has been expanded a great deal in this version of the book from the previous Special Edition text.

Unlike .NET 3.0, .NET 3.5 provides dozens of new C# language features and .NET APIs. This edition of the book will walk you through all of this new material using the same readable approach as was found in previous editions. Rest assured, you'll find detailed coverage of Language Integrated Query (LINQ), the C# 2008 language changes (automatic properties, extension methods, anonymous types, etc.) and the numerous bells and whistles of Visual Studio 2008. What you will learn

  • Everything you need to know - get up to speed with C# 2008 quickly and efficiently.
  • Discover all the new .NET 3.5 features -- Language Integrated Query, anonymous types, extension methods, automatic properties, and more.
  • Get a professional foothold -- targeted to appeal to experienced software professionals, this book gives you the facts you need the way you need to see them.
  • A rock-solid foundation - focuses on everything you need to be a successful .NET 3.5 programmer, not just the new features. Get comfortable with all the core aspects of the platform -- including assemblies, remoting, Windows Forms, Web Forms, ADO.NET, XML web services, and much more.
Who is this book for?

If you're checking out this book for the first time, understand that it targets experienced software professionals and/or students of computer science (so please don't expect three chapters devoted to "for" loops). The mission of this text is to provide you with a rock-solid foundation to the C# 2008 programming language and the core aspects of the .NET platform (OOP, assemblies, file IO, Windows Forms/WPF, ASP.NET, ADO.NET, WCF,WF, etc.). Once you digest the information presented in these 33 chapters, you'll be in a perfect position to apply this knowledge to your specific programming assignments, and you'll be well equipped to explore the .NET universe on your own terms. 4 out of 5 stars Big book goes into big detail concerning C# and .NET 3.5   December 26, 2008
I'd suggest this book to anyone who is a seasoned developer versed in several languages and architectures, who just hasn't picked up C# or .NET yet, as its a great primer for both.

5 out of 5 stars Great core coverage   December 25, 2008
While no single book can cover everything in detail, this book does a great job of covering the core of .net and c#. This book touches upon WPF, WCF, LINQ and ASP.NET, but you'll need other dedicated references to fully exploit those technologies.

2 out of 5 stars ASPX 2.0 -- Theory, minimal code   November 27, 2008

I bought both the Beginner and Pro versions of the book. As a 28 year experienced programmer with no experience in ASPX, I needed a book with tons of code examples. This series is the opposite of what (I feel) most programmers need. The authors substitute tons of verbal exposition for working code samples. Worst of all, they barely mention data objects which is by far the most important aspect of C#/VB programming. I wish some ASPX/C# guru out there would produce a book with nothing but code. Chapter headings, yes, and nothing else but thousands of working code examples using database (SQLServer) and objectdatasource and data objects. If the book you are considering stops at coverage of the SQLDataSource (instead of covering the newer and far more useful objectdatasource) the book is obsolete.

5 out of 5 stars Essential C# 2008 Book   October 25, 2008
This is definately the quintessential C# book to have on your bookshelf! As a previous reviewer mentioned, some books do not deserve the Pro title. This one more than deserves the Pro title. I am not finished reading the whole thing yet but plan to have it completed in the next few weeks.

Many of the items I am marking to come back and read again as I know I will get more out of it the second, third and possibly fourth time around. The material is difficult, but Troelsen conveys it in an excellent manor though his explanations and examples.

I just wish there was a way to put the book under my pillow and absorb all the material because it does take a while to read and comprehend the material, but the time spent reading and studying is well worth it. I don't think there is a better book out there to learn C# 2008 and the .NET 3.5 Platform. This book along with Illustrated C# 2008 and Accelerated C# 2008 will give you the knowledge to do anything possible utilizing C# and .NET.

If you don't have this book, buy it now and read it!

5 out of 5 stars Great book!   September 25, 2008
This book is well written and understandable, and goes into significant depth. After reading the section on delegates, I finally understand what they are!
