Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The updated 7th edition of this combination textbook and workbook is designed as an introduction to Spanish for classroom use. The emphasis is on oral proficiency—conversational speaking and listening comprehension—but the authors also present detailed instruction in the fundamentals of Spanish grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing in Spanish. The book is filled with exercises and answers, true-to-life dialogues, humorous cartoons, illustrations of Hispanic art, and photos that capture the flavor of Spanish culture in Spain and Latin America. In this new edition, the lessons have been enriched with subtopics to enhance conversational speech. Also new with this edition are four compact discs that have been updated in content, and which replace the previously available tape cassettes, This audio component supplements the book, providing valuable instruction in listening comprehension and correct pronunciation of spoken Spanish. A teacher's manual is also available.

3 out of 5 stars Good Resource to learn Spanish   January 6, 2009
The product is good enough to teach Spanish as a Second Language, Amazon is not a good place to order from. Usually make mistakes, keep your money, and is very difficult to get your money back through them!

5 out of 5 stars A lot of bang for your buck!   December 14, 2008
For only $20 you certainly get a lot for your money. This text covers what I would say to be the equivalent of one college semester of beginner Spanish. The stories are a joy to read and make you feel very proud of yourself to be able to read whole paragraphs in Spanish! The exercises are easy to follow and well designed to teach you the concepts and help you remember them. The book is divided into 20 "Work Units" that each teach a certain grammatical component of the language, as well as some vocabulary. Delving right into the story at the beginning of each Work Unit may be frustrating, as you would not yet know many of the words in it. I suggest doing the grammar/vocabulary part of the Work Unit first, then going back to the story and answering the questions about the reading. (All new words are translated after the story).

This was the book I first used to start teaching myself Spanish. I have previous extensive knowledge in French, so I'm sure that made understanding the concepts much easier for me. It is extremely rewarding to get through each Work Unit then finish the book! And then you do the same with Spanish Now! Level 2 (which is just as good).

As previous reviewers stated, I did notice a COUPLE of typos (but they were not numerous at all). However, they are misspelled words that are repeated many times with the correct orthography throughout the book, so when you see it (if you see it) you'd recognize it as a typo as you would if you saw a typo in English.

After completing this book and Spanish Now! Level 2, I took the SAT II Test in Spanish and scored well enough to be placed in Advanced Spanish at New York University!

Note that the version I bought (in a bookstore) did not come with CDs, so I cannot attest as to the quality of those.

I also recommend the book 6,000+ Essential Spanish Words.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners   November 22, 2008
I've been using it for 3 weeks now and like it. I'd recommend it any beginner of Spanish.

3 out of 5 stars SUPER DISAPPOINTING!   June 10, 2008

I was so excited to dive into this book, just to find numerous typos, and cd's that don't corroborate with the lessons in the book. The pace is very fast for a beginner, however, I will continue with it since I am essentially 'stuck' with it now. When I am finished I will definitely do extensive research, and hopefully choose something more organized next time. I am super disappointed with this book!

5 out of 5 stars Good Book   May 19, 2008

I bought this book for a Spanish class. The class has finished, but I like the book enough to continue thru the book, on my own. I would recommend this book.

Every chapter has a list of around 30 new words to learn, a paragraph written in Spanish using the new words (along with CDs that say the paragraph verbally), then about 6 more pages of questions/hints/tips.
